Any self respecting farm shop in Cumbria is not complete without a choice of sausages and even more specifically, Cumberland sausages.
The famous Cumberland sausage, and since 2011 holder of a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status under EU law, is now legendary around the world. Fat, meaty, spicy and peppery, the mighty Cumberland can be found in its traditional ring form or as individual sausages. It is a staple of most pubs and inns in the Lake District and Cumbria and always a popular menu choice.
But what full Lakeland/Cumbria/lake District breakfast is complete without a Cumberland sausage and something that so many visitors to the county look forward to waking up to.
With food at the forefront of everything within the vast and varied Westmorland Family empire, it is no surprise they take the quality of items such as the sausage they sell very seriously. Cumberland sausage features on the cafe menu in Tebay Services, is sold in the farm shops, served at the Rheged cafes and on the menu both evening and breakfast in the Tebay Service Westmorland Hotel.
The hotel regularly received high praise for its food and even more so with new guests having never experienced such quality in accommodation, food and beverages at a motorway services.
And it is the week of the sausage right now in fact, the Love Pork British Sausage Week which is running from the 3rd to the 9th of November. Dave, the head butcher for the Westmorland Family Group has made it into the NorthWest regional finals with his Cumberland sausage. Fingers crossed for a Cumbrian win!
