What a great way to start off November by attending the 44th annual powerboat records week, as popular now as it was in its conception in 1970.
Organised by Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club, the records week is held on the spiritual home of powerboat records, Coniston Water where Donald Campbell achieved the water speed record at the same time that he held the land speed record.
Held on Coniston Water since 2005 after the Windermere speed limit was introduced, the records week has grown from strength to strength in terms of both visitor numbers, worldwide publicity and entrants. Even more so as entries are open for crafts such as tiny hydroplanes to inshore circuit racers and the large offshore boats. Each compete is their various classes in this the finale to the powerboat racing calendar.
It seems so natural this event happening on Coniston Water now that it is hard to imagine it being held anywhere else now and for spectators it really is a sight to behold. Coniston water, especially at this time of the year, is stunning with autumnal colours galore and spectacular backdrop to the various speed attempts.
The Lakeland Cottage Company have a choice of self catering cottages in Coniston to stay whilst watching the record attempts on Coniston Water ranging in size for 2 people up to 10+ and available for 3 night weekend and 4 night midweek breaks as well as full weeks.
